It's two and a half weeks until Mother's Day!!!! Don't panic....all you have to do is grab that Hallmark card and no worries my friends...I have just the thing you can whip up in no time for your mom. Spruce up her home decor with this all natural DIY room spray! It only has three ingredients and any age will love putting this DIY together for her or even grandma for Mother's Day! Either is sure to love it, I guarantee it. What good is a beautiful decorated room without a beautiful scent running throughout it? One of my pet peeves is walking into my home and smelling something awful!
I'm sure you've thought that buying room sprays from the grocery store are easy enough, but they are also filled with a host of chemicals and ingredients I'm sure you wouldn't necessarily want in yours or your mom's home. I was diagnosed with estrogen dominance a couple years ago, and little changes like this can go a long way! I've been on a journey to try and create as much of a chemical free home as I can. It's not always easy, but I found that this particular switch from my usual grocery store brand, like Febreeze, to all natural was very simple.
Start out by purchasing a stainless or glass reusable container with a built in spray nozzle. I like using stainless or glass because it's better for the estrogen dominance battle I'm fighting. Plastics carry chemicals, so I personally stay away from them when possible. I got this one from a local health food store, but they have some here on amazon.ca that work just as well. I like smaller bottles too because they are great for travel or to leave in smaller rooms.
These are the three ingredients you will need to make the spray:
1- One part distilled water
2- One part witch hazel
3- 20 (more or less) of essential oils
I buy my distilled water at my local health food store called Nutters
but I'm sure you can find it your local grocery store, too. To be honest, I have made this with regular filtered water at home, and I don't see a difference. I think it's best to use distilled, but when I don't have it on hand, I just use my filtered water.
The witch hazel I use is Earthwise from Well.ca
I always buy alcohol free, but I don't think it would matter at all if you had the witch hazel with alcohol. I love this brand and it works really well. Witch hazel is great for so many things! I love having it around the house.
Here are a few oils I love to put in my rooms sprays: Lavender always wins in my opinion. You can pair it with lemon, peppermint, eucalyptus, rosemary and so many more...and it always makes everything smell so fresh. You can use it at bedtime to help you sleep by spraying a little on your sheets! I buy either the NOW oil brand or the Young Living brand of oils, but it's totally up to you which you'd like to choose. As long as you've researched and feel comfortable buying it, then that's what's important. I do not ingest this room spray, so I say go for any you love.
Another one of my favorite combinations is grapefruit and peppermint. Think about a yummy fruit salad with peppermint leaves in it...yummo! It leaves any bathroom smelling fresh after hubby leaves (if you know what I mean) lol :), and it's also perfect in the kitchen after cooking foods like fish or seafood.
I like to spray in the morning to help me get that spring in my step on a Monday.
This is a combination I just love: orange, rosemary and cinnamon! Wow...if this blast of freshness doesn't put a warm smile on your mom's face, I don't know what will. It's so rich and earthy and is great for that cozy spot near her family room fireplace.
Here are a few other combinations your mother will love:
The Gin and Tonic: Lime and Juniper berry oils (great for that date night ;) )
Line-dried Laundry: Lavender, Grapefruit and Melaleuca oils (spray onto those freshly tossed bath sheets out of the dryer for a lovely scent in your towels)
Beat that Virus: Eucalyptus, Cloves, Oregano oils (this one will make you crave pizza lol, but it works great!)
When you are all done making your choice of oils, place a funnel in the spray container of your choice and add all of the ingredients. I like buying the six pack of bottles on amazon and making a bunch for different rooms. If you have a labeling device, you can name each of your homemade recipes and have one kind of spray for each room in your mom's home. That would be a great gift basket for sure! You can see how you could definitely make this fun for kids, or have a blast as an adult making these.
This photo booth picture above was taken when my girls were only 5 and 6 years old! How precious are those memories. When you gift wrap this for mom, include a fun old photograph to help her know how much you love her. Gifts don't have to cost a lot, but they definitely should come from the heart.
Let me know your special recipe below! I wish all the mothers and grandmothers out there a very Happy Mother's Day. This year will be the first year away from my children as I will be in away in Europe :,( but I will be with them in spirit :) Please head over to my Instagram to say hi! Have a blessed time making and creating your special gifts! Jenn xoxoxo
